What free means here

Every night the crawler fetches each registry’s item endpoint — the exact URL npx shadcn@latest add would fetch. If the source comes back, the item is free. If the endpoint answers 401, it is paid. If a registry serves no item endpoint at all, the item is marked unverified and is kept off this page, because an unverified item published under a free heading is the one mistake this index cannot afford to make.

That distinction matters more than it sounds. Several registries publish a fully public, fully browsable manifest and gate the item endpoints — so you can read every block’s name and description, and the install fails. Those show up on the libraries page as free + paid, and their gated items never appear here.

Free to install is not the same as free to use

The crawler checks whether the source is served, not what its licence permits. Most of these registries publish under MIT, and the licence for each one is on its own page here, read from the GitHub repository. Where a registry states no licence, that is shown as an absence rather than guessed. Check it before shipping something commercial — a component you can download is not automatically a component you can sell.

Blocks versus components

A registry:block is a composed section: markup, layout and often several files, meant to be dropped in and edited. A registry:ui is one control. Searching for pricing will return both, and usually you want the block.
